Kcho
The sculptor, painter and engraver Alexis Leyva, or Kcho (Isla de la Juventud, 1970) is famous as the most internationally renowned Cuban artist since Wifredo Lam. In the last decade he has held numerous solo exhibitions at institutions as prestigious as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (1997), the Jeu de Paume in Paris (1998) and the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid (2000).One could say that the sea is the starting point of all of Kcho's work, in which there appear endless naval elements such as boats, oars or quays. The obsessive presence of boats made with improvised, weak materials points to the precarious nature of existence and the desire to escape from the penury of this destiny.
