Javier Mariscal
Javier Mariscal (Valencia, 1950) is a multifaceted artist whose work ranges from illustration, design, graphics, and stamped textiles to painting, engraving, and sculpture. Influenced by the comic and by Pop Art, his work centres on quotidian environments and is characterised by a simple iconography and an intelligent sense of humour. In 1987 he was selected to participate in the Documenta in Kassel, but his wide recognition originated with his drawing of Cobi, the figure chosen as mascot for the Barcelona´92 Olympic Games. In 1990 Mariscal created Estudio Mariscal in an old rehabilitated factory. During that decade, he worked at a feverish pace, collaborating on publications, billboard design, postcards, posters, and exhibiting in numerous shows in national and international galleries. Among his awards are the Premio Nacional de Diseño (1999) and the Valencianos para el Siglo XXI de Las Provincias Multimedia (2006), distinguishing his activity as a graphic creator and his great international projection.
