Antonio Mingote

Well-known drafter and journalist Antonio Mingote (Sitges, 1919 - Madrid, 2012) became a cartoonist in 1946, working with La codorniz. His long, successful career is linked with the Spanish newspaper ABC, where he has worked since 1953. His graphic-literary style, subtle and ironic, is characterised by the apt line in his painting and the rapid description of characters. His drawings constitute a daily chronicle of Spanish life, with an unmistakable voice reigning to express his refined humanity. A director of magazines, cinema script writer and novelist, he has also created stage settings, paintings, murals, and has collaborated on radio and television programs. In 1961 he received the Medalla de Oro del Círculo de Bellas Artes and in 1987 he was named a member of the Real Academia Española. Among many others, he has been awarded the Premio Nacional de Periodismo (1980) and the Premio Ciudad de Alcalá de las Artes y las Letras (2006).
