About this work:
In 1944, the cry of exasperated anguish that emanated from the powerful verses of Hijos de la Ira (Sons of Anger) exploded like a bomb in a climate of enforced optimism during the initial post-war period. This «intimate diary» by Dámaso Alonso portrays a bitter vision of life, a feeling of impotent rage in the face of our own misery and the misery of the world around us. The remarkable illustrations by Josep Pla-Narbona (Barcelona, 1928) show this tortured feeling of desolation, and transform the cry into a heart-rending pictorial image. To achieve this, Pla-Narbona, an excellent illustrator and engraver, needs nothing more than a pencil and a burin. In naked black and white he evokes the highly expressive and moving vision of an existence which, according to Dámaso Alonso, is a «terrible journey». The luxurious edition that Círculo del Arte has made of this impressive book is accompanied by an engraving by Pla-Narbona, which stands out for the strength of its central concept and its identification with its literary model. The book: with 10 illustrations by Josep Pla- Narbona.
