Albert Ràfols-Casamada

Albert Ràfols-Casamada (Barcelona, 1923) studied architecture and painting in Barcelona, before completing his artistic training in Paris. There, in the Fifties, he came into contact with Post-Cubist figurative painting which, along with the more lyrical elements of American Abstract Expressionism, had a profound impact in his work. The knowledge of the oeuvre of Picasso, Matisse, Braque, and Miró among others, influenced profoundly on the young painter, as well as his interest in the theories of American Abstract Expressionism. When, in 1955, he settled definitively in Barcelona, he started his own artistic path, which has led him to the creation of a vast oeuvre which has conceded him great international recognition.

Since then, his work has been characterised by its elegant compositions of orthogonal forms, to which he adds an emotive and luminous chromatic sensibility. After showing an interesting relationship, in the sixties and seventies, with movements such as Neo-Dadaism and New Realism, his work has become more based on pure, intensely pictorial values: fields of colour in expressive harmony, against which charcoal lines stand out, linking the fields of colour to its harmonious, expressive line. At the same time his interest in art teaching led him, in 1967, to found the school Escola Eina.
